seen any good movies?

I am so glad you asked. Our weekend pattern, lately, has gone something like this: kiddo wakes up really early, we play "pass the baby" for a while until we are sure she isn't going to go back to sleep, Mimi feeds her while I sleep a little, then Yuki and I (and Trixie) go downstairs to see what cinematic horrors await us on the Tivo while Mimi sleeps a bit longer.

nerds!

Lately we've been treated to Things To Come in glorious black-and-white blurr-o-vision. It was H.G. Wells at his allegorical finest. In short: war bad, science good, and in the future, no matter how uncivilized we become, we will all speak with snooty English accents. Last week brought us Horrors of Spider Island, in which scantily clad German "dancers" get into cat-fights, run around looking for "Gary," and then all try to seduce their rescuers rather than just leaving the island because I guess they were waiting for "Gary," who was bitten by THE horror of spider island, to kill a few of them first. And most recently we watched Fire Monsters Against the Son of Hercules which was pretty great despite its total lack of Fire Monsters. There was one lake monster early on but Maxis (the son of Hercules) jabbed it in the eye with a spear and, well, it didn't get any better from there.

Okay, our lives are not all bad cinema, sometimes we take time to read the classics.

We've discovered that no matter how much pink you put your daughter in, some people will still call her a boy. We don't mind when people ask "boy or girl," really. We refuse, however, to put her in one of those gigantic pink bow headbands. That's like putting a diaper on a monkey. Too much? Sorry. We do like her in purple.

hey kids, make up your own caption! Daddy's got nothing!

We really, really like her in hats. Especially hats with ears.

"bunny hat" finally fits!

Yuki is very into grabbing things. Not everything she grabs is such a good idea.

oh, and pulling. she LOVES to grab and pull. hi, Mimi!

Trixie continues to find new and interesting ways to remind us that she still lives here. Tummy time is, apparently, not just for babies.

this is so much better than eating diapers. good dog.

Yuki is very interested in Trixie. She (Yuki) watches her (Trixie) every move very intently. And we think Trixie likes Yuki okay, too. This morning, Yuki was on a wicked cranky-bender. She was just inconsolable. Mimi tried everything but kiddo just wanted to cry. So, while Mimi was packing lunch and Yuki was in her seat, wailing, Trixie walked over, licked Yuki's face, shook, and laid down. Yuki was stunned into silence. She sat there, quietly, staring at the dog for the rest of the morning.

who's the big baby? who's the big baby?

And our dear, sweet, wonderful daughter is still not terribly interested in napping although if you carry her around long enough she gives up.

it's like carrying around a bag of rice. adorable, sleepy rice.

If anyone is keeping score, our streak for consecutive weeks voluntarily attending mass ended at "one." Our record for consecutive weeks eating brunch at St. Clouds is "two."

That is all.

Just in case there was any doubt in your mind (and I doubt there is any, because you have photographic proof that what I am about to say is true):

Your daughter is probably the most adorable baby... ever.

She really is just too cute. I especially love her in the bunny hat. She looks stunned, like even she didn't know she was THIS cute.

On the boy or girl question front, a waitress asked about Zack last weekend. It surprised me because we really haven't gotten the question much since he got more hair. Plus, he was wearing jeans and a t-shirt with a motorcycle on it. Huh. Anyway, I just smiled and said, "I know, isn't he pretty?" Because he is. Thanks to the Smatano devotees for letting me share my baby story, and now back to Yuki.

Mimi, do you think she wants to be a de-entist? She'll be a success!

dreaded doll

Yuki is now approaching the age where she is hearing at school that Santa perhaps does not exist and that things are coming from parents. This concern is also spreading to the area of the Tooth Fairy and the Switch Witch. But, Yuki still wants to believe in the magic.  So much so that while she expressed concern, she has yet to come out and ask us. So I suggested we watch Miracle on 34th Street which we did during Thanksgiving weekend and she was starry eyed. We wanted to help restore her faith in Christmas at least for one more year.  Enter: American Girl Doll Now, here is where the magic collides with reality. Yuki first  encountered  American Girl Doll in kindergarten when a few of her friends talked about theirs. When she first mentioned it I had a physical reaction to almost vomit. It was one of those "Disney Princess," "Barbie," and other things that the girls are supposed to get interested in that I dreaded. I don't have any problems with the...
