that was halloween

Well, another Halloween come and gone and still no sign of the Great Pumpkin. We remain hopeful.

We have it on pretty good authority that next year is the year.

In the meantime, we have been enjoying the Ottim Time.

The colors are quite breathtaking, if you just narrow your focus

We had a festive Halloween celebration, complete with fancy hand-me-down Halloween outfit from a parent at the theater.

Not pictured: the princess bike they gave us.
We still need her to figure out the pedals on her tricycle.

Mimi had to work on Halloween night so we did a little daylight trick-or-treating at the swanky outdoor shopping type place. I think we used to call them "shopping centers" but I'm sure there's a more "upscale" name for them that I would refuse to use if I knew it.

A good time was had by all. No, seriously.

Because time was tight and because Mama has access to a huge supply of costumes, kiddo was a caterpillar this year.

The balloon, though inedible, was the prize of the day

And because she is savvy enough this year that her getting the candy and then Dadoo eating it was not going to fly, we took a giant step out on to the slippery slope of CANDY!

Mama shows how it's done. Mostly because Dadoo isn't so good with the notion of sharing.

It was all over after that.

Not pictured: the dinner she powered through while staring at the chocolate across the table from her.

Never thought I'd be the "one piece a day" parent, but after she got up on Sunday and asked for candy for breakfast, I hid the rest of the stash. Once again, I have my standards and they are double.

Some people take a picture of their kid on the first day of school every year. We have fallen into the habit of taking her picture on Halloween every year. So there.

Not pictured, the antenna that she pulled off her costume on the car ride home from trick-or-treating.

So that was that. Next up: JAPAN! I'm certain that will be a pleasant trip without a single incident of note.

See you next time!

As I started reading this I realized that it would end with the cute kiddo on porch with pumpkins shot. Can I get a side by side off all of them? I love "aw shes so grown up" moments :)

Well you ALMOST made me miss autumn with that last shot -- but then I went outside in my sleeveless blouse and slingback sandals and got over it. The candy however...

Is that an Easter Basket full of Halloween Candy? Not sure the Great Pumpkin can handle the competition!

I have adopted the Audrey Smith method of doling out Halloween candy: Eat it until it is gone! And it almost is!! A few more hearty breakfasts of Nestle's crunch and Starbursts...

I am glad you explained the costume. I thought it was another character from "Gabba Gabba Hey" or whatever it is, and I felt out of the loop.

Also, she is effing cute. I can't believe you held off on candy this long. Beware, though - my mom never had any candy or sweets in the house, which is why, as an adult, I devour them by the bucketful.

Mim - I was particularly struck by your comment, "you feel you belong to both countries, and neither." I have never been able to put my finger on how I have felt about Israel and America and you put it so perfectly. Your musings on Japan with Yuki make me think of the day that Justin and I will eventually take our kid(s) to Israel. Yes, I said kid(s). I have a feeling that I will continue to take life and, later, parenting advice from you and your wonderful hubby. Thanks for making me smile.

dreaded doll

Yuki is now approaching the age where she is hearing at school that Santa perhaps does not exist and that things are coming from parents. This concern is also spreading to the area of the Tooth Fairy and the Switch Witch. But, Yuki still wants to believe in the magic.  So much so that while she expressed concern, she has yet to come out and ask us. So I suggested we watch Miracle on 34th Street which we did during Thanksgiving weekend and she was starry eyed. We wanted to help restore her faith in Christmas at least for one more year.  Enter: American Girl Doll Now, here is where the magic collides with reality. Yuki first  encountered  American Girl Doll in kindergarten when a few of her friends talked about theirs. When she first mentioned it I had a physical reaction to almost vomit. It was one of those "Disney Princess," "Barbie," and other things that the girls are supposed to get interested in that I dreaded. I don't have any problems with the...
