halloweeny

This was a kind of a big Halloween for us this year. Kiddo had an opinion about her costume for the first time. Mimi made it for her so had to explain the concept of a "production deadline." And Mother and Child actually took to the streets for proper trick-or-treating. Turns out it was the first time for both of them. (And you can read more about that on Mimi's companion blog right here.) Halloween isn't a thing in Japan like it is in the States and now that we live in a regulation neighborhood (as opposed to a block of apartments) and have a regulation trick-or-treat-aged child, we could indulge in the holiday. It was loads of fun once Mimi deduced/decided to just go to whatever house had Jack o'lanterns out front. Kiddo was not ready to come home, but after a few turns through the neighborhood her bucket was at its limit. Now every day is a protracted candy negotiation.

Anyway, here is the costume in question, for any who didn't see it:

And if you don't have a kid who is partial to PBS cartoons, the costume in question is Word Girl. Look it up. We'll wait.

Okay, it was actually a really busy weekend of stuff for us. On Friday morning, there was a Halloween party at Kiddo's daycare. Even though she doesn't attend on Fridays, Mimi took her down for the fun. And crafts with Snow White:

After that party, Kiddo was off to the theater for her Friday drama class. (Don't know if we mentioned that she's taking drama classes -- she is! Two of 'em. More on that later. Maybe.) After the drama class and a short car nap, it was off to Dadoo's office for the Halloween party. The nice thing about working at a game company is that they take their parties seriously. This one was pretty swell even if nobody got high score on pinball.

By the way, Word Girl's sidekick is a monkey named Captain Huggy Face. If you know that, Mimi's shirt is HILARIOUS!

Then on Halloween, we hauled down to the Haunted Forest that Youth Theatre Northwest has been doing the last couple of years.

Then we ran around like crazy people for a while before another car nap and then off to the aforementioned trick-or-treat bonanza. Kiddo has it wired and there is no going back.

And because it has become something of a tradition, here is our Halloween timeline:

2007

2008

2009

2010

One down. Bring on that day in November devoted to killing ourselves with food. In the meantime, in the name of all that is decent, brush your teeth!

As for the daily protracted candy negotiation: One of Jason's classmates brought a teddy bear that somehow lights up to school to share on November 1. Where did she get the teddy bear? She traded almost all her trick or treat candy for it. She now has 5 pieces of candy and a teddy bear for her troubles! And no candy negotations! I wish I had started something like that when mine were smaller!
I LOVE Yuki's costume. What fun!!

I still say: give em the Halloween bag. Let em have at it until they are in a complete sugar daze and be done with it. The key here is that you eat just as much so you can BOTH be in a sugar daze. It works everytime!!!

Great Costume! Reminds me of when Ben wanted to be "Countin' Carl" - a mini-show in between regular PBS shows way back when. Never too old to enjoy Halloween!

Word girl, thinking hard, trying to come up with a fancy word for pumpkin. Hey, I know! How about "Jack-o-Lantern"?! I just made that one up. Feel free to use it.

Gasp. When did she get so darn big? I ... I think I need a minute. Maybe I'll go brush my teeth and think about my own mortality.

For the record, she only gets more adorable as the years go by.

Word Girl rules! And it's great that Phi's heroic focus is being passed down to the next generation. Oh, the YTNW forest looks fun, too. Next year, we're there.

dreaded doll

Yuki is now approaching the age where she is hearing at school that Santa perhaps does not exist and that things are coming from parents. This concern is also spreading to the area of the Tooth Fairy and the Switch Witch. But, Yuki still wants to believe in the magic.  So much so that while she expressed concern, she has yet to come out and ask us. So I suggested we watch Miracle on 34th Street which we did during Thanksgiving weekend and she was starry eyed. We wanted to help restore her faith in Christmas at least for one more year.  Enter: American Girl Doll Now, here is where the magic collides with reality. Yuki first  encountered  American Girl Doll in kindergarten when a few of her friends talked about theirs. When she first mentioned it I had a physical reaction to almost vomit. It was one of those "Disney Princess," "Barbie," and other things that the girls are supposed to get interested in that I dreaded. I don't have any problems with the...
