(panic over) snow (that never came) day

It's been a tiny bit snowy and a whole lot of cold the last couple of days. Mimi stayed home today because the theater follows the school district's policies and they closed the schools so the theater closed, too. Thus mother and daughter were home today in the cold and not-actually-very-much-snow. The roads were wide open so I went into work. I got this email at about 9:15. And please note that Yuki had woken up at 3:30 and 4:45, then Mimi had to get up at 6:30 to check school closures.
-------------------------

Yuki walked in at about 7:50. I was not pleased. It felt like it had only been 7 seconds since you left. She climbed in bed and said, "don't get mad about my shoes anymore mama, OK? and don't say 'no tv in the morning' anymore." I said, with my eyes closed, "I won't say those things if you keep your promise, but that is up to you." I know she was bringing that up because she wanted to watch tv. After going around in that conversation for a bit, she changed the subject and said she was hungry and ready for breakfast. Still with my eyes closed, I asked her to bring the wipes and a pair of underwear. It took her about 10 minutes to do so but she did. I had a splitting headache so I was lying still in bed for a bit and she launched into her improv nonsensical singing. When I opened my eyes, she had her underpants on her head. and was playing with the sticker seal on the wipes. I got up.

She requested to bake the precious croissants so I took them out realizing that you have to leave them out overnight to let them rise before baking. She understood the situation and asked for a waffle and raisin toast. About half way into toasting, she exclaimed that she wanted Honey Nut Cheerios instead. I made her eat the waffle anyway. She is now sitting on zabuton at her breakfast tray shlurping milk with a spoon, occasionally putting a cup to the side of her face saying, "I'm drinking through my cheek."

Please come home early.

Later Kiddo got all dolled up in her snow pants from cousin Anna and went out "sledding."

Sad trombone ...

When they'd had all the fun they could have with that, they got dressed up and hit the Japanese grocery.

You're never fully dressed without a smile.
And a tutu. And a zebra hat.

How was your day?

I know. I know. Seattlites panic at the word "snow" because we've had some traumatizing experiences in recent years where people were trapped in their cars for 10 hrs on the highway and in buses from total lack of snow budget. Sad but true.

You all really need to call me next time this happens. Crazy Aunt Geraldine could use some Yuki time, and it sounds like Mimi could use some Mimi time. :)

dreaded doll

Yuki is now approaching the age where she is hearing at school that Santa perhaps does not exist and that things are coming from parents. This concern is also spreading to the area of the Tooth Fairy and the Switch Witch. But, Yuki still wants to believe in the magic.  So much so that while she expressed concern, she has yet to come out and ask us. So I suggested we watch Miracle on 34th Street which we did during Thanksgiving weekend and she was starry eyed. We wanted to help restore her faith in Christmas at least for one more year.  Enter: American Girl Doll Now, here is where the magic collides with reality. Yuki first  encountered  American Girl Doll in kindergarten when a few of her friends talked about theirs. When she first mentioned it I had a physical reaction to almost vomit. It was one of those "Disney Princess," "Barbie," and other things that the girls are supposed to get interested in that I dreaded. I don't have any problems with the...
