Oh? Canada?

Did you know that this is Canada's national motto?

Because Mimi had some vacation days to burn and because I have nothing but time right now and because we figured we better get used to the idea of traveling with a kid, we took a mini vacation up to Victoria BC. All went well and Yuki was a champion traveler. Mimi says the key to traveling with kids is to outnumber them. I think she might be right.

It was an early-morning ferry ride so we had to get up around 5:00. Yuki began her day exactly 2 minutes before my alarm went off. We made it in plenty of time, though our dear daughter seemed ... displeased(?) about being in a crowd at 6:45.

But all was made right later by the motion and white-noise of the ferry ride.

We arrived about 5 hours before check-in for our hotel so we staggered to the nearest restaurant for lunch. It happened to be that Canadian national treasure, "The Old Spaghetti Factory."

Some of us brought our own food, apparently. Anyway, after all the pasta and bread and beer (Starch Fest 2008) we were ready for another nap but, since we had nowhere to lie down, we decided to wander around Victoria for a while.

We went to "Undersea Kingdom" or something. It's a small aquarium that's actually underwater. But it's a huge tank underwater and all the fish seemed kind of lethargic. Anyway, it was nice to be out of the rain.

Eventually, we checked into our hotel (the Helm's Inn, which seemed very popular with the over 70 set) which had pink walls and a turquoise carpet and a burgundy bed-spread. But it had a kitchen so we found a grocery store and stocked up for breakfasts and dinners. And snacks.

On Monday, we went for High Tea at the Empress!

It was swanky and fun (and more relaxing after Mimi managed to clear the piece of melon out of Yuki's windpipe).

Later we went to Beacon Hill Park and Yuki had her first turn on a bucket swing.

It was an unqualified success. We also went to the petting zoo ...

to Chinatown ...

and the Royal BC Museum.

We capped off the trip with a visit to the not-to-be-missed "Miniature World!"

We wanted to get back to London but time/budget didn't allow for it this year, so Mimi pretended she went back to London as a giant. I took pictures of tiny people on tiny scooters, because I'm a nerd and that sort of thing amuses me.

It was a lot of fun. Yuki did really well with being in a new environment and we did pretty well traveling with our kid for the first time. We were all very tired by the end of it.

The End.

You know, I understand that there were many grand adventures discussed in this... but my favourite part was Yuki's facial expression in the first picture of her. I would look like that too at 6:45am!

dreaded doll

Yuki is now approaching the age where she is hearing at school that Santa perhaps does not exist and that things are coming from parents. This concern is also spreading to the area of the Tooth Fairy and the Switch Witch. But, Yuki still wants to believe in the magic.  So much so that while she expressed concern, she has yet to come out and ask us. So I suggested we watch Miracle on 34th Street which we did during Thanksgiving weekend and she was starry eyed. We wanted to help restore her faith in Christmas at least for one more year.  Enter: American Girl Doll Now, here is where the magic collides with reality. Yuki first  encountered  American Girl Doll in kindergarten when a few of her friends talked about theirs. When she first mentioned it I had a physical reaction to almost vomit. It was one of those "Disney Princess," "Barbie," and other things that the girls are supposed to get interested in that I dreaded. I don't have any problems with the...
