long-range plan for embarrassment

So, I'm a week and a day into my new job (this is Philip) and so far it's been pretty swell. The people are good, the work is interesting enough, and when we had a "copy emergency" this week, I did a fast batch of rewrites and the response was, universally, "Great! Thank you!" Then I stood around waiting for the seven rounds of rewrites and the "What if you said it this way instead?" but it never came. "Great! Thank you!" Is that any way to run a business?

Anyway, the company sells all manner of athletic type clothing that you can customize with team and school names and player names and numbers and such. There is a large database of schools and club teams and rec teams that I was playing around with to see if I could come up with any amusing combinations (so far one of my favorites is a shirt from the St. Vitus Elementary school in New York that I reconfigured so it read "St. Vitus Dance Team" -- look it up). So before this turns into a plug, I would just like to show you the t-shirts that Mimi and I are already threatening to wear to Yuki's high school graduation.

If that's too specific, we could go with (courtesy of the "Asian Cricket Club" and "White High"):

Of course, we'd insist Yuki wear this:

Our daughter is going to love her adolescence.

And for anyone keeping track, kiddo's head wound is healing nicely. In fact, we have moved from the gigantic forehead-encompassing bandages, to the far less subtle but way cuter "Hello Kitty" bandages. (Thanks to pal Nikki for the photo).

I don't know where the sunglasses came from.

The autonomy is nice. Unfamiliar and somewhat daunting, but nice.

panicky interlude

This is not the promised "Magical Ponies" post. Apologies. Instead, this is the "You Negligent Monster" post. Because Kiddo is in a Japanese daycare, parents are asked to remove their shoes before coming in. No problem. I have a pair of loafers that I hate that I wear on pickup days so I can get in and out more quickly. Most days while I'm putting my shoes on, Yuki will run away from me and I will make noisy protestations and she will giggle and come back. Today, however, there was the running and the noisy protestations and the giggling and a splat. I guess she tripped ("running away" involves going around a corner where I can't see her) because she was crying and pulling herself up off the floor when I got to her. "No big deal" as she likes to say (she does, really, it's friggin' adorable). She had a little red line across the bridge of her nose but there was no blood. She asked for a Band Aid and I told her we'd get her one...
