what we love this week

1. Other music!

Oh, thank the maker! While "They Might Be Giants" are still kings in our house, we have managed to sneak in a few other CDs here and there. Yuki loves the Animaniacs music (and shouts "yaaaay" after every song, though somewhat perfunctorily) and will even tolerate the occasional playing of Raymond Scott's "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights," a favorite of her old Dadoo's. Once in a while she will insist on "Sympathique" by Pink Martini which seems an oddly sophistimicated (yes, sophistimicated) choice for a kiddo, but we don't mind.

2. Mommy's cereal.

Yesterday she ate it for lunch and dinner. She knows we have it. She knows where we keep it. When she wants it, there is nothing else. I managed to hide the Peanut Butter Crunch from her, but she is obsessed with Honey Bunches of Oats. I no longer trust the Post company. What in hell do they put in it?

3. Pushing stuff

She pushes her toy stroller, she pushes her stroller, she pushes cars, she pushes shopping carts (both real and Children's Museum versions, above) -- although tonight we went for a walk and she pushed her stroller until we came to the last hill before our street. Then she climbed in her stroller and made Mimi push her until we reached the flat part at the end of our block, then she got out and pushed some more. Such a clever, clever, lazy girl.

4. Aht.

Yes, aht. She drew this while sitting on my lap as we watched every video of her on our computer. Which brings me to ...

5. Camera Baby!

I don't know if she knows it's her or not, but she loves Camera Baby. I think it was my sister Judy who used to have to hide her camera in her shirt in order to get pictures of her kids, so maybe it's a Smith thing. Anyway, it's really getting so I can't take any pictures of her. As it is, we have about 700 videos that look exactly like this:

Le sigh.

Finally, thanks to friend Chanda and nephew Ric for bestowing electrified bubble blowing machines on us. Your generosity is truly appreciated by everyone in our house. If anybody else is feeling generous but doesn't have a bubble blowing apparatus, Yuki is also fond of rolling around in piles of cash. Preferably uncirculated twenties and fifties. Just sayin' is all ...

Photos, videos and now links to other websites! I'd say it's your blog that's becoming very sophistimicated. I can see why Dadoo likes Raymond Scott ("Dinner Music for a Pack of Hungry Cannibals"? 'Nuff said.) But Yuki's choice of Pink Martini proves you have one very Bossa Nova Baby.

I trust that her favorite track on "Sympathique" is "Donde Estas, Yolanda?"
If Elena is within a half mile of Lucky Charms, she would find it, hunt it down, and (if we let her) consume bowl after bowl till she could eat no more. I think this was the food that made her learn the phrase "please, Daddy, please!"

Philip - Don't forget that we grew up on sugar cereal, white bread, grape jelly and kool aid. It's not all that bad! Remember when they called Sugar Smacks - Sugar Smacks and didn't try to disguise them as Honey Bunches of Oats?
those were the days!

Does the children's museum have a super bonus "for two hunner dollars"?

Only if you can rhyme "the great Khan, Kubilee."

panicky interlude

This is not the promised "Magical Ponies" post. Apologies. Instead, this is the "You Negligent Monster" post. Because Kiddo is in a Japanese daycare, parents are asked to remove their shoes before coming in. No problem. I have a pair of loafers that I hate that I wear on pickup days so I can get in and out more quickly. Most days while I'm putting my shoes on, Yuki will run away from me and I will make noisy protestations and she will giggle and come back. Today, however, there was the running and the noisy protestations and the giggling and a splat. I guess she tripped ("running away" involves going around a corner where I can't see her) because she was crying and pulling herself up off the floor when I got to her. "No big deal" as she likes to say (she does, really, it's friggin' adorable). She had a little red line across the bridge of her nose but there was no blood. She asked for a Band Aid and I told her we'd get her one...
